Love Doesn’t Last

You dream yourself a life,
Envision yourself a shadow,
Close your eyes and pray,
For just the perfect tomorrow.

A story you wish to write,
Short, about two friends,
Design a happy ending,
And all you end up with is a fight.

A deep cup of coffee,
Deeper conversations still,
So much said in the silence,
So much that couldn’t be.

Memories that were made to be shared,
To be cherished by just you two,
They run down your face in tears,
Sign of a heart way beyond repair.

Isn’t this the story,
The one you set out to write,
You may not know this now,
That love’s end is always gory.

Call me a naysayer, or what you may,
History bears witness,
And broken hearts tell stories,
That true or not, Love doesn’t stay.
